How Bruxism Can Damage Your Teeth

Damaging Effects of Teeth Grinding

One of the most common reasons why patients develop TMJ is because they have a bad habit of grinding their teeth (bruxism). Teeth grinding is often a subconscious activity that occurs when a patient is stressed or angry. Some people grind their teeth while sleeping without even knowing it. You may have bruxism if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • Weak or fractured teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Tightness in the jaw
  • Jaw pain or discomfort

Benefits of Occlusal AdjustmentBenefits of an Occlusal Adjustment

For many patients, undergoing an occlusal adjustment (bite adjustment) can help to break the habit of grinding the teeth and improve jaw mobility. Some patients with TMJ need to undergo an occlusal adjustment to restore proper functioning of the jaw, in conjunction with other treatments or modalities designed to alleviate jaw pain. We also perform an occlusal adjustment after restorative or cosmetic procedures to ensure the teeth are coming together properly.

  • We love Dr. Rolfson. He is wonderful with my kids, and great with my husband and myself as well! His office staff is also one of the most professional, courteous, and kind group of people you will ever meet. Most folks don't like going to the dentist....but with Dr. Rolfson and his staff, it's easy. HIghly recommend!!!

  • We love going to Dr. Rolfson. We have been going since we moved to Castle Rock years ago and we bring our whole family! The staff is wonderful and the experience and expertise is priceless. Several years back, through an xray - they spotted a benign tumor in my jaw that could have caused severe nerve damage if not removed. I was so grateful for this discovery so I could have it removed. Couldn't imagine being anywhere else for all our dental needs!

    ---- Deana A.
